Does anyone have tips when participating in showmanship for poultry?

Showmanship is when you present a chicken or other poultry to a judge. He scores your performence over many qualities such as exipiter's apperance, birds tameness, and how much you know about the specific breed that you are showing.

I usually use my white plymouth rock bantam, but he has suffered from frostbite on his comb, so I don't think I can show him, or can i without the judge deducting points? I have two rose comb, partridge wyondottes. What are the disqualifications i shoud mention and any uniqge qualities they have. Would they be a good bread to use. they both i bought when they were adults and both of them are really flighty. Should I use them?

If you have never heard of anything about showing poultry, its a wonderful project. You learn things that couldn't even imagine you'd ever know. If you think chickens are dumb, you don't know them. they all have personallities. They all diserve to live, and i love all of them that i have.

I have not only shown chickens, and been a 4-H leader, I have also been a judge.

Healthy clean chickens that are tame and used to being handled impress me.

Bathe the chicken several days before the show and re-clean legs feet and face on show day. Rubbing a tiny drop of baby oil on the face and comb will make them look extra nice.

Work with your chickens on posing. Stand them up and praise them when they poise in a good fashion and stand still for a while. Work on getting them in and out of a "show pen". This really seems to frighten many birds and one that will allow you to get them in and out without freaking out will always show better. Also feed them bread or other little treats while they are in the pen. This teaches them to come to the front of the pen and look at the judge in an interested sassy way. It will help the points. Learn all you can. If you really care about your birds and really know your stuff you will impress the judges. Many, (me) ask questions while we are judging to test your personal knowledge.

I am troubled about the frostbite problem. It sounds like you need a better way to winter your birds. You should check out the City Biddy Hen House. I have one and the water inside will be liquid when the temperature outside is 15 degrees F with out any added lights or heat. I have never had any frostbite problems.
